According to www.dictionary.com, efficiency can be defined as the state or quality of being able to accomplish something, a job, task or assignment with the least waste of time, and effort. It originates from the Latin word efficientia, which is equivalent to being efficient. Efficiency is important in any man’s life as it guards against wasteful or non-purposeful engagement or use of one’s allocation, or resources.
Importance of Efficiency
These aptly describe simply the benefits accruable from the state of being efficient
1.      As said earlier, efficiency guards against wasteful use of resources, thereby creating an environment suitable for obtaining optimum result or yield from such a venture.
2.      It brings about excellence. An efficient use of time means doing the right thing at the appropriate time. Proper preparation prevents poor performance; needless to say, proper preparation is synonymous with efficient preparation.
3.      Efficiency in business makes one outstanding. An excellent person is one who outshines others. The person who excel will be brought forward, away from the crowd, to be crowned on a higher platform.
4.      Efficiency allows faster growth. An inefficient worker is denied more work, no employer wants a waster, the efficient worker on the other hand is given more responsibilities and thereby encouraging his/her growth and development.
5.      Efficiency fast-tracks the growth period, and earns appreciation. An efficient follower does not remain in a position for a long period; he soon becomes a leader with a marked improvement in remuneration.
6.      Efficiency guarantees long-term success of any business or enterprise. A trial they say convinces one. An efficient dealer is certain to receive a second visitation from the buyer, an inefficient dealer is abandoned after the first trial.
Where to be efficient
You may ask, where should I be efficient? In my studies? In my workplace? In camp? Out of camp? I put it to you that, the simple answer to these questions is everywhere. There is a popular quote “whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well” In other words, whatever is worth doing at all, is worth doing efficiently.

These will be placed under two broad categories:
1.      Time, and
2.      Effort: this cut across all material, and immaterial things, tangible and intangible. All manner of resources, human, energy, monetary, material, processed and non-processed.
Traits/consequences of lack of efficiency
For any one who is inefficient in his deals or business, such a person is guaranteed a place at the rear.
1.      Retarded growth.
2.      Chronic failure in assigned tasks or assignment.
3.      Loss of opportunities for growth and development.
4.      Loss of job or position.

Do you want to excel? Do you want to be outstanding? Do you want to be recognized for great achievements? Then be efficient. Efficiency is the key that opens the door to Excellence!
